About Ron Bitner

Great wine begins in the dirt. Understanding that dirt has been our forty-year obsession. Caring for the land is a responsibility. Long before we planted vines in Caldwell, Idaho, our foundation was built in laboratories and field research stations.

From Research to the Rows

Dr. Ron Bitner took an unconventional path to winemaking. He earned his Ph.D. from Utah State University. His dissertation focused on the alfalfa leafcutting bee. Early field research took him to Costa Rica to study bee populations. Ron spent decades bridging the gap between academic entomology and hands-on agriculture.

He previously served as a University of Idaho pest management specialist. He advised major agricultural leaders like Pioneer Hi-Bred on integrated pest management. He also partnered with International Pollination Systems to manage non-Apis bees for crop pollination. His expertise extended to public media. He worked as a consultant for Idaho Public Television on their Emmy-nominated documentary titled "Beyond the Buzz."

A Living Classroom

A lifetime of science comes alive on fifteen sustainable acres today. Bitner Vineyards is a true family affair. Ron farms alongside his wife, Mary, and his daughter, Amy. The family produces acclaimed cool-climate wines. Their vineyard serves as a living classroom. Every harvest is an opportunity to advocate for pollinator conservation. They fight against the threats of harmful chemicals, climate change, and urbanization.
